How to Start MATLAB for Optimum Performance

From Jacket Wiki

It is quite important to ensure that the settings for the operating system and hardware are set for highest possible performance when performing Jacket (or MATLAB computations). By experience I have found the following procedure to provide the highest possible performance - but I have also found that it is the only way to ensure that the results I get are reproducible.

The proposed procedure is:

  1. Kill all irrelevant processes - mail, browser, disconnect Internet, kill the virus checking process, ...
  2. Make sure the settings are made such that they are optimized for performance - when doing computations forget about saving the rainforest anyway. In particular ensure the PCI bus runs at full speed, and the same for the CPU.
  3. Don't use a resource demanding screen saver - just use pure black.
  4. Start MATLAB.
  5. Set the priority of the MATLAB process to "High" in Windows and "renice -20" in Linux.
  6. Perform the computations.
